Flooding Halts Trains, Swallows Highways in Western India

Parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra are experiencing severe flooding due to continuous heavy rainfall on Thursday, July 24, 2026. Several districts, including Valsad, Navsari, and Tapi in Gujarat, and Palghar in Maharashtra, are the worst affected.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for these regions, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall coupled with gusty winds of 60-70 kmph.
Train services on the Western Railway section between Dahanu Road, Maharashtra, and Valsad, Gujarat, faced significant disruptions. This was caused by rivers overflowing near key railway bridges, suspending operations on several routes as water levels crossed danger marks.
National Highway 48, a vital route, has been closed due to flooding. Bridges and roads in affected areas, including Valsad and Vapi, are submerged, with floodwaters entering residential areas and homes in some parts of Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Rescue operations are underway. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has rescued villagers trapped in Tapi district. In Palghar, Maharashtra, schools and colleges were declared a holiday as a precautionary measure due to widespread flooding.
