Fisherman's Goa Holiday Becomes Nightmare Stroke Battle
21 Feb
Summary
- Retired fisherman suffers stroke while on holiday in Goa, India.
- Medical bills rapidly accumulating, exceeding thousands of pounds.
- Family fundraising for treatment and future repatriation flight.

A holiday in Goa, India, turned into a nightmare for retired fisherman Wayne Muress, 66, who suffered a stroke on a beach. Muress, from Grimsby, was on a 21-day trip with his wife Maggie, intended to enjoy life following a lung cancer diagnosis six years prior. While recovering from his cancer treatment, he unexpectedly fell ill and experienced stroke symptoms, including facial drooping and leg shaking.
He was rushed to an Indian hospital, where his condition worsened, leading to an induced coma and a tracheostomy to aid breathing. Doctors later took him out of the coma, but he has not yet woken up. His family revealed he may also be suffering from pneumonia.
The medical expenses have been substantial, with an initial bill of £6,000 and a daily rate of £1,400 at a private clinic before he was transferred to a government hospital. As Wayne had not taken out travel insurance due to the high cost associated with his lung cancer, his family is now raising funds through a GoFundMe page to cover his ongoing medical treatment and the significant expense of a repatriation flight.
Wayne's wife, Maggie, and a close friend are with him in Goa. The community has rallied around the family, with donations pouring in to support Wayne's recovery and return home. His dedication to his family and his passion for West Ham United are also being remembered during this difficult time.
