Greece Wildfires Claim 3 Firefighter Lives

Three firefighters lost their lives in Greece while battling out-of-control wildfires on Wednesday and Thursday. Two succumbed in Crete, trapped between fire fronts in the Rethymno region. A third firefighter died near Gytheio in the Peloponnese. These heroes "fell heroically in the line of duty," according to a statement from the fire department, as gale-force winds, droughts, and heat worsened the blazes.

Dozens of rural and forest fires erupted across Greece within 24 hours, with challenging fronts in southern Crete and on Lesbos. Emergency alerts were issued, leading to evacuations in tourist areas like Agia Galini and heightened alerts for hotels in Rethymno.

Greece is not alone in facing this crisis. Neighboring Turkey is also struggling with multiple forest fires, evacuating residents from popular holiday resorts. In France, massive blazes have destroyed areas equivalent to four times the size of Paris, forcing over 220,000 people to flee their homes since last week. Some relief arrived in Bordeaux with rain and lower temperatures allowing evacuees to return.
