Wildfires that ravaged western Europe have largely subsided, with the most critical situation now unfolding in Greece. Gale-force winds are fueling a dangerous blaze near Porto Germeno, a popular seaside resort on the Gulf of Corinth. Hundreds of residents have been forced to flee by sea as flames consume pine forests, with evacuation orders expanding.

This new emergency in Greece carries a somber historical echo, recalling the devastating 2018 wildfire near Mati that claimed 104 lives. Firefighting aircraft are struggling to operate effectively due to extreme turbulence. Meanwhile, major fires in southwestern France, including one in Gironde that prompted massive evacuations, are now considered under control. Similarly, Spain and Portugal have reported their significant blazes are no longer advancing.
