Grand Canyon Floods Kill Chiropractor, Spark Rescue Effort

A major flash flood surged through the Grand Canyon last weekend, claiming the lives of a Texas chiropractor and at least one other individual. The severe weather event has left more than a dozen hikers unaccounted for, prompting ongoing search and recovery operations. The floodwaters caused significant damage to the park's primary water pipeline, necessitating emergency water restrictions for both visitors and the approximately 1,600 residents of Grand Canyon Village. This incident occurred near popular lodges and camping areas deep within the canyon, where visitors often stop overnight. Scores of tourists were evacuated by helicopter, describing a massive deluge and reports of rockslides. The floodwaters also impacted a burn scar area, exacerbating runoff due to diminished vegetation. Forecasters have warned that further flooding is possible during the region's monsoon season, which typically runs through the summer months. The intense rainfall this year has been linked to a strong El Niño phenomenon, increasing atmospheric water vapor. Climate scientists also note a connection between human-caused climate change and the intensification of short-term downpours in the Western U.S. The damaged water pipeline is part of a $208 million modernization project expected to conclude next year.
