Goa has witnessed a stark 44% surge in pedestrian fatalities by October 2025, with 49 lives lost, a significant increase from the 34 recorded in the same period last year. October alone saw a 33% rise in pedestrian deaths, with four succumbing to injuries compared to three the previous year. This alarming trend follows a period of decreased traffic enforcement, leading to a 49% reduction in registered violation cases and a 38% drop in fine collection, fostering a sense of impunity among drivers and riders.
Despite the grim statistics for pedestrians, overall fatal road accidents in the state saw a 13% increase this year. While September's fatalities matched the previous year's figures, October reported 17 fatal accidents, the same as last year, though resulting in 18 deaths. Tragically, two separate incidents in October claimed the lives of three pedestrians, highlighting the severe risks faced by vulnerable road users.
Authorities have acknowledged the impact of reduced enforcement on road safety. The traffic cell has formally requested the Public Works Department to implement both short-term and long-term measures to mitigate road accidents. As of October 2025, 215 people had lost their lives in road accidents, a decrease from 241 during the corresponding period last year, yet the spike in pedestrian deaths remains a critical concern.
