Goa Buses Face Safety Deadline: March 31 Crucial
1 Mar
Summary
- Goa buses must meet AIS-119 safety standards by March 31.
- NHRC instructed compliance with critical safety recommendations.
- Non-compliant buses will be immediately withdrawn from service.

In Goa, the transport department has issued a public notice demanding strict adherence to AIS-119 safety standards for all operating buses by March 31. This urgent directive stems from the National Human Rights Commission's (NHRC) push to implement crucial safety recommendations from the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT).
The AIS-119 guidelines set essential safety and construction benchmarks for sleeper coaches, focusing on fire resistance, emergency exits, structural integrity, and berth arrangements. Four non-negotiable safety measures are to be enforced across applicable vehicles. These include removing driver partition doors, ensuring emergency exits on buses up to 12 meters, installing ready-to-use fire detection and suppression systems in sleeper coaches, and mandating structural compliance for sleeper berths.
All buses that do not meet these requirements must be immediately removed from service. The transport authorities emphasized that this directive is effective immediately, requiring full compliance from all operators, including private owners and the Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd. Non-compliance will lead to strict actions and legal penalties.
