Summary

  • A GJU student is on a ventilator after a bus ran her over.
  • Students are protesting for a dedicated bus stop outside the university.
  • The bus driver and conductor allegedly fled the scene post-accident.

A serious accident involving a roadways bus has left a Guru Jambheshwar University (GJU) student in critical condition. The victim, identified as Vijeta, a psychology student from Sonipat, was run over by a bus operated under the kilometre scheme at Barwala Chungi on Tuesday. She had just disembarked the bus when the incident occurred.

Eyewitnesses reported that Vijeta was trapped under the rear wheels for approximately ten minutes before a bystander managed to move the bus, allowing her to be freed. She was initially taken to the civil hospital but was later referred to a private facility due to the severity of her injuries and is currently on ventilator support.

In protest of the accident and the lack of adequate safety measures, GJU students staged a demonstration on Thursday, blocking the main gate of the Hisar bus stand. They are demanding the establishment of a permanent bus stop outside the university, appropriate action against the responsible bus driver, and financial aid for the injured student's family.

Student leader Harikesh Dhanda highlighted that similar incidents have occurred previously, forcing students to alight buses on the road. He stressed the urgent need for a designated bus stop to prevent future tragedies. Police have registered a case related to the accident.
