- The attack occurred early Saturday morning during a family pilgrimage.
- Forest officials captured three lions for behavioral analysis.

A tragic incident unfolded on Girnar hill early Saturday morning when an 11-year-old boy, Mayur Chauhan, was attacked and killed by a lion. The boy was ascending the nearly 5,000-step path with his family when a lion emerged from the forest and dragged him away. This event has heightened safety concerns for the numerous pilgrims visiting the site.
The attack, which occurred around 5:45 AM, resulted in the consumption of approximately 40% of the child's body. Preliminary investigations suggest the lions may have been attempting to cross the staircase area, a common occurrence, and the child was inadvertently in their path. This marks the first reported instance of a lion attacking a pilgrim at Girnar.
In response to the incident, forest officials have captured two lions and one lioness for behavioral analysis at Sakkarbaug Zoo. The area surrounding the staircase has been temporarily closed to pilgrims as authorities conduct a thorough search for any remaining wild animals. Concerns have also been raised regarding the adequacy of lighting along the pilgrimage route.
