During the Jitiya festival on Saturday, a distressing event unfolded at Gandhi Ghat in Mango. A nine-year-old girl, Poonam Kumari, was swept away by the Subarnarekha river while bathing with her family.
She had accompanied her parents and elder sister, Jyoti Kumari, to the river. Both sisters reportedly slipped and were caught by the river's current. Alerted by the mother's cries, local residents intervened and rescued Jyoti, who was subsequently admitted to MGM Hospital.
Despite immediate rescue efforts, Poonam could not be saved and was carried downstream. Authorities have contacted the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and a team is expected to arrive soon to commence a comprehensive search for the missing child.
