In Melvindale, a 16-year-old was found deceased in a home where a generator was running in the basement. Separately, in Sumpter Township, two younger children, aged 8 and 12, were discovered unresponsive in a garage where a generator was in operation.
These incidents highlight the critical dangers associated with carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas produced by generator exhaust. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their faster breathing rates. Operating generators in garages, basements, or any enclosed area can lead to fatal consequences, with hundreds dying annually from carbon monoxide poisoning.
