Road Chaos Ends: Junction Reopens After Flyover Demolished
21 Aug
Summary
- Park Lane roundabout in Gateshead will reopen Friday evening.
- The flyover demolition cost over £30m and took four weeks.
- Footpaths need repairs due to damage from the demolition.

The Park Lane roundabout in Gateshead is scheduled to reopen on Friday evening, bringing an end to four weeks of significant disruption for local drivers, residents, and businesses. The closure was necessitated by the demolition of the Park Lane flyover, an abandoned road structure that spanned the junction linking the Felling Bypass to the Tyne Bridge.
Anneliese Hutchinson, Gateshead Council's strategic director for the economy, acknowledged the challenges posed by the closure, thanking the community for their understanding. The removal of the flyover, which cost over £30 million, has dramatically improved visibility into Gateshead town centre, offering sightlines not seen since the 1960s.
Although the main junction will be accessible, the council noted that footpaths around Park Lane will not reopen immediately. These paths sustained damage during the demolition work and are in need of repair. Demolition crews are preparing for the final stage, which involves removing the section of the flyover directly above the underground Tyne and Wear Metro lines.
