28 Apr
Summary
- Extreme rainfall caused compound flood disaster with 32 deaths.
- Landslides and debris flows destroyed multiple villages.
- All 325 affected households moved into new homes by late 2025.

An investigation report by Gansu province authorities detailed the "Aug 7" mountain flood disaster in Yuzhong county. Occurring between August 7 and 8, 2025, extreme short-duration rainfall in the Xinglong and Kangu River basins initiated sudden mountain floods. These events led to a tragic loss of 32 lives, with 19 individuals still missing and 15 injured. The disaster was a compound chain event, encompassing mountain floods, landslides, and debris flows.
Investigators determined that intense rainfall was the primary cause, amplified by the region's challenging terrain. Large-scale landslides in gully heads fed into flash floods and debris flows. These torrents, redirected by the landscape, breached channels and embankments, devastating multiple villages. Following the catastrophe, local authorities implemented extensive rescue and reconstruction efforts, successfully relocating all 325 affected households, comprising 1,195 people, into new residences by the close of 2025.
