Ganges Bridge Section Collapses into River
4 May
Summary
- A 10-inch expansion joint initially subsided.
- A bridge slab near pier 133 fell into the Ganges.
- Swift evacuation prevented casualties from the collapse.

A critical bridge section near pier 133 collapsed into the Ganges River late last night, an event that began with the subsidence of a 10-inch expansion joint. The incident occurred around 12:35 AM, when a slab started sinking, prompting immediate action from local officials.
Thanks to the presence of mind of a local officer and the SHO, residents were evacuated swiftly. Within 15 minutes of the evacuation, the bridge slab plunged into the river. No vehicles were on the affected section at the time, averting a potential tragedy.
The bridge has since been sealed on both the Bhagalpur and Navgachhiya sides, halting all traffic. Authorities are working to establish alternative routes, acknowledging that nighttime conditions make immediate solutions challenging. Commuters wishing to reach Bhagalpur are advised to travel via the Munger side while other arrangements are sought.
