Ganga Swells Above Danger Mark: Gates Opened!

Heavy monsoon showers and a significant water release from Madhya Pradesh's Bansagar Dam on Wednesday led to an alert in Uttar Pradesh. As a result, dam gates in Sonbhadra and Chandauli were opened on Thursday to manage the rising water levels. The Ganga River subsequently flowed above its danger mark in Ballia and Ghazipur by Thursday morning.
Sonbhadra District Magistrate Charchit Gaur inspected the Chopan area, assessing preparedness and safety arrangements. To regulate the flow, seven gates of Rihand Dam were initially opened, releasing approximately 77,000 cusecs before five were closed. Similarly, Chandauli district remained on alert, with water levels in Musakhand and Chandraprabha dams being managed by opening their respective gates.
District officials are actively monitoring riverbank villages, advising residents to stay clear of water bodies. Relief teams are prepared for immediate deployment in sensitive areas. In Ghazipur and Ballia, the Ganga's level surpassed the danger mark, prompting officials to remain vigilant against potential flooding from the river and its tributaries.
