France experienced its hottest summer on record in 2026, leading to devastating wildfires that generated around 22,500 insurance claims. The total estimated losses from these fires have reached approximately 563 million euros ($634 million), according to the federation of insurers.
Nearly 100,000 hectares of forest were ravaged, marking the highest figure recorded in 20 years of satellite monitoring. The southwestern regions of Gironde and Landes, along with the southeastern Var region, were particularly affected.
