A fourth firefighter has died from burns after being overcome by a wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border. Nathan Matthews, 43, passed away on Friday from injuries sustained last month. He was part of a Helitack crew deployed to Mesa County, Colorado.
On June 27, Matthews and his colleagues were caught in a 'burnover,' a dangerous situation where wildfires rapidly expand, trapping crews. Despite deploying emergency shelters, three firefighters, Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson, died at the scene. Matthews and another firefighter were hospitalized.
The western United States is currently experiencing numerous large fires exacerbated by dry conditions, minimal snowpack, and high winds. Firefighters remain vigilant as concerns rise for potential worsening fires in areas like Oregon.
