Rough Seas Rescue: Teenagers Saved Off Fleetwood Coast
28 Jun
Summary
- Up to 20 teenagers were rescued from rough seas off Fleetwood.
- A coastguard performed a 'tethered snatch rescue' for two children.
- Three teenagers required hospital treatment after swallowing seawater.

HM Coastguard successfully rescued approximately 15 to 20 teenagers from turbulent waters near Fleetwood on Friday evening. The group had become stranded a significant distance from the sea wall in rough seas. One coastguard officer bravely entered the water to perform a 'tethered snatch rescue' for two of the youngsters and used a throw bag to save another.
Three of the teenagers were taken to a local hospital for assessment after swallowing seawater. The incident occurred despite a similar patrol the previous day in calm waters at the same location, emphasizing the sea's rapidly changing and dangerous nature. Coastguard officials stressed the importance of water safety awareness, especially with recent presentations given at local schools.
The rescue highlights the unforgiving power of the sea and the critical need for beachgoers to respect conditions, tides, and currents. HM Coastguard Fleetwood was supported by HMCG Lytham and a paramedic during the operation. This rescue comes weeks after a similar incident had a less positive outcome.
