A wildfire that ignited near Flatrock, Newfoundland and Labrador, on Wednesday evening has been successfully extinguished. The fire, which began around 4 p.m. near Wind Gap Road and Wade's Farm Road, spread "very, very fast" through grassy meadows and into a forested coastal area. Contributing to the swift containment, a provincial water bomber delivered two loads of water to the scene. Crews from Torbay and Pouch Cove also responded to the incident. The fire was out by approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials estimated the fire covered four hectares, and thankfully, there were no homes or structures in the immediate vicinity. Fire Captain John Callahan highlighted the surprising speed of the grass drying, noting it was snow-covered just a week prior. He expressed relief that the fire did not spread into denser timber. This event serves as a stark reminder of wildfire risks, especially as the province approaches the one-year anniversary of the devastating Adams Cove fire.
