A catastrophic failure occurred at Somethin' Fishy Pets in Fox Lake when a 2,000-gallon fish tank burst on Monday afternoon. The incident sent a deluge of water through the store, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 350 fish.
The pet store was closed at the time of the rupture, and owners suspect a seam at the top of the tank may have given way. Co-owner Derric Johnson recounted the sudden, intense noise and rush of water. Co-owner Nicole Georgean described their desperate attempts to rescue fish from the floodwaters.
This nearly 30-year-old business has been a community staple. The large tank was originally built by a former owner and had been undergoing updates. Community members have rallied to support the recovery, with a GoFundMe campaign launched to help replace the tank and other damages.
While many fish were lost, a few dozen were saved. The owners expressed their devastation, noting the tank was the heart of their business. Significant cleanup has been completed, with assistance offered by customers and the landlord.
