- Over 10,000 firework injuries occur nationwide annually.
- Hands, eyes, and face are most vulnerable to burns.

This past Thursday, the UPMC Mercy Burn Center, in collaboration with Allegheny County Public Safety, conducted a public demonstration to underscore the significant dangers associated with fireworks. Using a watermelon to simulate the human body, experts visually conveyed the potential severity of firework-related injuries.
Dr. Jenny Ziembicki, medical director at UPMC Mercy's Burn Center, stated that over 10,000 firework-related injuries occur nationwide each year. Officer Monique Jones of the Allegheny County Police Department highlighted that common accidents involve children holding fireworks before they are thrown, resulting in devastating functional impairments to hands, eyes, and the face.
The risks extend beyond the individual, potentially endangering homes and the wider community. Experts advised that temporary enjoyment from fireworks, campfires, grills, or firepits can lead to permanent disabilities, particularly impacting children's future aspirations, such as participation in sports.
Safety experts recommended leaving firework displays to professionals and always having a preparedness plan. They stressed the importance of knowing basic safety measures like 'stop, drop, and roll,' calling for help, and locating fire extinguishers to mitigate potential accidents.
