The incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 18, when a passenger vehicle, reportedly speeding and traveling the wrong way, struck a semi-truck near Interstate 275.
A dangerous situation quickly escalated as liquid, possibly fuel, spilled from the truck and ignited, trapping occupants inside the vehicles. Responding police officers, demonstrating immense bravery, entered the burning wreckage to rescue those caught in the blaze.
The fire caused significant damage, melting traffic control signals and creating a hazmat concern. All nine injured individuals were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical. The intersection was closed for several hours for cleanup and investigation. Officials praised the courageous actions of the officers and fire crews who battled the intense flames.
