A devastating four-car collision on the A48 in Carmarthenshire resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The incident occurred when 90-year-old John Howell Price drove his vehicle for over 450 meters against traffic on the dual carriageway, colliding head-on with a car driven by 30-year-old solicitor Emily Thornton-Sandy. Tragically, both drivers sustained fatal injuries, with Mrs. Thornton-Sandy passing away six days later in the hospital. Her dog, Scout, also died in the crash.
Forensic investigation indicated no mechanical failures or adverse weather conditions contributed to the crash. Evidence from CCTV and dashcams confirmed Mr. Price's incorrect maneuver exiting a junction. Despite a report of syncope two days prior, no medical reason deemed him unfit to drive. Furthermore, there was no indication of alcohol, drugs, excessive speed, or mobile phone use by either driver.
The inquest concluded both drivers died from multiple injuries sustained in the road traffic collision. The senior coroner expressed that the reason for Mr. Price's action remains unknown. In the wake of the tragedy, Mrs. Thornton-Sandy's family advocated for greater awareness regarding elderly drivers' capabilities, while organ donation offered a positive outcome from the loss.
