Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack and successfully rescued several residents from the burning building.
Tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other individuals were transported to the hospital, one with injuries deemed life-threatening. The incident left residents of nine apartment units displaced. The Topeka Fire Department's investigation unit has preliminarily attributed the fire's cause to accidental unattended cooking.
The apartment complex, known as Village at Old Town, is owned by Eucalyptus Real Estate LLC. The fire's impact extended beyond the immediate casualties, affecting numerous residents' housing. The property's value was noted, with an appraisal of over $1.29 million.
