A fatal shark attack occurred off the coast of Queensland on Sunday, claiming the life of a 39-year-old man. The Cairns resident was diving with friends at Kennedy Shoal, south of Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef, when a shark attacked him, causing a severe head injury.
Despite the efforts of his companions and emergency services, the diver was pronounced dead upon arrival at Hull Heads. He had been spearfishing at the time of the encounter. Bull sharks had previously been reported in the area.
This tragic event follows another fatal shark attack just days earlier off Western Australia, where a Perth man died while spearfishing near Rottnest Island. Australia has averaged over three fatal shark attacks annually, with a previous incident involving a 12-year-old near Sydney in January.
