This extreme heat, coupled with dry conditions, has created a tinderbox effect, making vegetation highly flammable and challenging for emergency services.
On the Greek island of Crete, firefighters are working to contain persistent hot spots along a 15-km front. Strong winds have complicated efforts, with forecasts indicating gusts up to 115 kph. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies estimates that 2,000 tourists were evacuated from Crete due to the fires, with considerable damage to property and farmland.
