Europe Burns: France, Spain Battle Raging Wildfires

Raging wildfires are advancing on Bordeaux, France, a key region for winemaking, as both France and Spain grapple with massive blazes.

In France, approximately 220,000 people have been evacuated. The Cap Ferret peninsula and areas around Bordeaux are severely affected, with firefighters working to protect the regional capital.

Spain has seen over 75,000 people evacuate and 30,000 more ordered to shelter in place. Central provinces like Avila, Madrid, and Toledo have seen vast areas burn, with additional fires in the eastern Castellon province.

These intensifying fires are attributed to prolonged drought and heatwaves, exacerbated by climate change. July temperatures in affected French and Spanish regions are significantly above the historical average.

International aid, including firefighting aircraft and personnel from Greece, Italy, and Portugal, has been deployed to Spain. Turkey is also sending two planes.

Spain's government plans to declare a civil protection emergency for central provinces to unlock recovery funds. The total area burned across Spain since January is six times greater than during the same period last year.

Wildfires are also occurring in Scotland, where firefighters are tackling a large blaze in Cairngorms National Park, and in Italy, where fires have disrupted traffic near Rome and led to evacuations in Puglia.

Pope Francis has offered spiritual support and solidarity to those affected by the devastating wildfires across Europe.
