An Airbus A330 carrying 282 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing in Porto, Portugal, on Saturday afternoon due to smoke detected in the cabin.
The flight, which had departed from Barcelona's El Prat airport, was en route to Boston, USA. As the aircraft prepared to cross the Atlantic, it suddenly turned back and headed southeast.
The crew declared an emergency, alerting emergency services at Porto's Sá Carneiro Airport, where a level two alert was activated. Firefighters, police, and ambulances were on standby for the unscheduled landing.
Fourteen individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation. Four passengers, including two men admitted to Sao Joao Hospital, were taken to the hospital with mild respiratory symptoms and were in stable condition.
Following the incident, the uninjured passengers were evacuated and boarded an alternative flight scheduled for the following afternoon. Air traffic in the area was briefly suspended to ensure a safe landing, with disruptions to airport operations being minimal.
