A tribal farm worker tragically lost his life after being trampled by an elephant in Latehar district on Thursday. The 59-year-old victim, Tibru Ganjhu of Maalhun village, was reportedly taking a late-night stroll when the animal attacked him. The incident occurred around 10:30 pm under Chandwa police station limits.
Following the fatal attack, the elephant wandered onto railway tracks between Mahua Milaan and Nindra stations. This led to the temporary suspension of train services for approximately 30 minutes, allowing the animal to safely cross. Railway officials issued caution notices to all train engines, advising reduced speeds between the affected stations.
This event echoes a similar incident last month where a sub-adult elephant sustained fatal injuries after being struck by a goods train on the same route. Ganjhu's family received an immediate ex-gratia relief of Rs 40,000, and a postmortem examination was conducted.
