Residents of Gomia's Mahuatand forest belt are experiencing renewed fear following the return of elephant herds. This resurgence of wildlife activity led to a serious injury for 45-year-old motorcyclist Raju Sahu late on Sunday night.
Sahu was traveling along a forest road near Jageshwar when a herd of elephants surrounded him. Despite his attempts to evade them, the elephants threw him into a nearby field, causing significant injuries. He was subsequently taken to Ramgarh for medical treatment with the assistance of local villagers.
Forest officials have confirmed the presence of approximately 37 elephants, moving in scattered herds throughout the Gomia region. This situation has put communities residing near the forest on high alert.
Authorities are strongly advising against complacency, emphasizing that elephant herd movements can change unpredictably. Residents are urged to remain indoors after dusk, particularly when near forests, fields, or deserted roads. They are also cautioned against approaching or provoking the animals, and to store attractants like mahua or liquor away from homes.
