Seven people died and more than 100 were injured when two trains collided on Sunday south of Egypt's capital, Cairo. The accident happened in the al-Ayyat district of Giza province, approximately 52 kilometers from Cairo.
The collision occurred when a train bound for Fayoum province crashed into the back of a stationary train heading toward Aswan. Investigators found the stationary train was on the same track and traveling in the same direction as the impacting train.
Locals from the nearby village of Kafr Girza quickly responded, helping to pull survivors from the wreckage. Ambulances transported around 80 injured individuals to nearby hospitals. The conductor of the train was among the fatalities.
President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the crash. The Egyptian Railway Authority dispatched emergency teams and cranes to clear the site and restore services. Train crashes are a recurring issue in Egypt, stemming from a history of mismanagement and poor equipment maintenance, although modernization initiatives are underway.
