4 Jul
Summary
- Eastside Fire is increasing staffing for potential holiday emergencies.

- Cold water can quickly tire swimmers, posing a drowning risk.

Eastside Fire is elevating staffing levels in preparation for the July 4th holiday weekend. This proactive measure addresses anticipated incidents linked to fireworks, water recreation, and impaired driving, common concerns during holiday celebrations.
In the previous year, Harborview Medical Center reported treating 58 patients for injuries sustained from fireworks. Unsafe handling of pyrotechnics can lead to fires and severe personal harm. Simultaneously, the cooling effect of water poses a significant risk to swimmers.
Battalion Chief Ben Hudson of Eastside Fire highlighted the grave outcomes of fireworks misuse, including severe injuries and fatalities. Safety recommendations include maintaining a 10-foot clear zone around fireworks and keeping water readily accessible. The Kiwanis Club of Snoqualmie Valley also offers pumps to enhance safety.
Beyond fireworks, cold water immersion is a critical concern. Hudson noted that cold water can rapidly lead to fatigue for swimmers. Free life jacket loan programs are available at various water access points to mitigate this risk.
Emergency crews are also prepared for traffic accidents. Hudson pointed out that impaired decision-making, particularly concerning drinking and driving, often increases after dark. Local fireworks regulations differ by jurisdiction, and a comprehensive list is available. Officials urge the public to plan ahead and make safe choices for a fun yet responsible holiday.
