Slippery Rails Halt East Yorkshire Trains Due to Falling Leaves
4 Nov
Summary
- Falling leaves created slippery rails causing train cancellations.
- Services between Hull, Driffield, Beverley, and Cottingham were impacted.
- Operator states normal service will resume once safe to do so.
Rail services in East Yorkshire have experienced notable disruptions due to falling autumn leaves. Since last Friday, Northern Rail has reported numerous cancellations affecting passengers traveling on routes including Hull, Driffield, Beverley, and Cottingham.
The primary cause identified by Northern Rail is the compression of leaves on the tracks, creating a thin, slippery layer. This condition can lead to trains sliding, necessitating service alterations for safety.
On Wednesday, specifically, 22 services operating between Scarborough, Bridlington, and Hull were affected, with trains skipping stops at Cottingham, Beverley, and Driffield. Additionally, 18 services between Hull and Halifax were impacted, with trains terminating at Bradford.
Passengers have expressed frustration, with one stating they had to find alternative travel arrangements. Another passenger noted that these disruptions occur annually. Northern Rail has temporarily adjusted timetables and omitted certain stops to ensure safe operations and minimize wider network impact.
