Storms Wash Away Steps to Iconic Durdle Door
27 Feb
Summary
- Durdle Door beach access is blocked due to storm-damaged steps.
- Lulworth Estate closed the path for public safety.
- The closure is temporary, with no reopening date confirmed.

Durdle Door beach, a globally recognized landmark on Dorset's Jurassic Coast, is currently inaccessible. Storms have severely damaged the steps leading to the beach, prompting a temporary closure by the Lulworth Estate for public safety reasons. The extent of the damage has created a dangerous drop, necessitating the closure until repairs can be made.
While a reopening date remains unconfirmed, visitors are still able to access the adjacent Man O' War beach. This situation follows other recent weather-related disruptions along the Dorset coast. Earlier this month, work continued to clear a significant sandbar that appeared in West Bay harbour, near Bridport, following stormy conditions.
Further along the coast, Birling Gap beach near Eastbourne has experienced a transformation. Typically a pebble beach, it is now covered in sand revealed by recent storms. National Trust noted this is unusual, attributing the sand's appearance to strong waves and high tides, and advised visitors to exercise caution.
