16 Jan
Summary
- Dudley Zoo closure caused by Storm Goretti led to extensive damage.
- Flamingo enclosure repair costs alone are estimated at £75,000.
- Public donations have already reached over £10,000 for repairs.

Dudley Zoo is facing a significant financial blow following damage incurred by Storm Goretti. The attraction had to close its gates for three days due to heavy snow and high winds, which resulted in damaged enclosures and downed trees and netting. The full extent of the repairs is estimated to cost hundreds of thousands of pounds across the entire site.
The damage to the flamingo enclosure alone is a substantial concern, with repair costs projected to reach £75,000. Despite the extensive damage, the zoo has since reopened its doors to the public. Visitors have shown remarkable support, contributing over £10,000 towards the necessary repairs and restoration efforts.
Director Matthew Lewis praised the staff for their swift actions in ensuring the animals' welfare during the storm. Senior birdkeeper Kris Pearson noted that while the flamingos would prefer to be outdoors, the rebuilding of their enclosure is a priority to improve their welfare. The zoo, which typically welcomes 300,000 visitors annually, is now focused on recovery and rebuilding.
