Ebola Spreads Unseen: 80% of Cases Unlinked
11 Jul
Summary
- Four of five new Ebola cases lack known patient links.
- True outbreak size may be two to four times official figures.
- Ninety percent of cases are concentrated in Ituri province.

The World Health Organization has revealed that a significant majority of new Ebola cases in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo lack any connection to known patients. Roughly 80% of new infections in the outbreak's epicenter are occurring outside of established contact tracing lists. This presents a major challenge for health workers attempting to curb the spread.
WHO officials estimate that the actual size of the current outbreak could be two to four times larger than the confirmed figures suggest. Approximately 90% of all reported cases are concentrated within Ituri province, with intense transmission noted in areas like Bunia. The virus has also spread to North Kivu, South Kivu, and Tshopo provinces.
Preliminary findings suggest that a milder strain of the virus may be contributing to the challenges, as it potentially reduces perception of risk, leading some families to care for sick relatives at home. This delays treatment seeking and allows for prolonged community transmission. A substantial number of deaths, around 70% in an early analysis, have occurred outside of treatment centers. Strengthening surveillance through community health worker training is a critical ongoing effort.
