A beloved shih tzu named Declan was tragically snatched by a mountain lion in Glendale, California, on Monday night. The attack occurred around 11:30 PM while the 5-year-old dog was on his final bathroom break, just feet away from his home. His owner, Laura McVay, described a sudden pull on the leash and a 'whoosh' as the big cat seized Declan.
McVay bravely attempted to scare off the mountain lion by making herself appear larger and yelling, but her efforts were unsuccessful. The distraught owner watched helplessly as the animal disappeared into the nearby foothills with Declan in its mouth. She has since reported the incident to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Wildlife officials confirmed it was likely a mountain lion, noting that while there were no prior reports in the immediate area, the Verdugo Mountains serve as a habitat for such wildlife. This terrifying event has prompted McVay to urge other pet owners to carry protective weapons for their safety and their pets' lives.
