Summary
- Clean clothes and showers are vital for disaster recovery and dignity.
- Partnership aids community resilience and social ties post-disaster.
- Research shows 90% of disaster-impacted Australians value free services.
In the wake of natural disasters, essential services like clean clothes and hot showers become paramount for restoring dignity and initiating healing. Allianz Australia and the charity Orange Sky have launched the Allianz Community Care program to address these critical needs, aiming to bolster community mental resilience and social connections.
This initiative acknowledges that rebuilding homes is only part of recovery; practical assistance and human connection are equally vital. Orange Sky, which provides free laundry and shower services nationwide, has assisted disaster-affected communities with approximately 20,000 loads of laundry since its first disaster response in 2015.
Research commissioned by Allianz reveals that almost 90% of Australians impacted by natural disasters deem access to free services crucial. Key post-disaster needs identified include shower facilities (63%) and laundry services (51%), underscoring the partnership's relevance.
The three-year collaboration will see Allianz contribute to Orange Sky's operational costs, leveraging Allianz's broad disaster impact visibility and Orange Sky's frontline experience and trusted community relationships to enhance on-the-ground support.
