A 35-year-old man from Chennai died on Saturday while trekking the Velliangiri Hills, bringing the total fatalities for the year to five. M Saravanan, a cab driver, began the ascent with friends on Saturday morning.
During the climb, Saravanan experienced stomach discomfort and briefly stopped. He later collapsed on the second hill, and was pronounced dead by doctors at the foothill. Officials suspect cardiac arrest, pending a postmortem.
This incident follows the death of a 21-year-old college student on Friday. In response, the Isha Yoga Centre established a new medical camp on the fourth hill, supplementing existing health department facilities.
