Tornado or Winds? Detroit Scrutinizes Storm Damage

Severe thunderstorms swept through Southeast Michigan on Thursday, September 3, 2026, leaving a trail of destruction and prompting an investigation into whether a tornado touched down. Detroit's east side was particularly affected, with damage reports including downed trees, power lines, flooded streets, and stranded vehicles.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in White Lake announced plans to survey the damage. This survey will determine if straight-line winds or a tornado were responsible. The NWS expects to release their findings around noon on Friday, September 4, 2026.
As a result of the storms, power outages impacted a significant portion of the region. DTE Energy reported over 320,000 customers without power as of 7 p.m., while Consumers Energy showed more than 27,000 customers affected. Authorities urge the public to maintain a safe distance of at least 25 feet from any downed power lines.
Tornado warnings were actively issued throughout Thursday afternoon across Wayne, Washtenaw, Oakland, Macomb, Lenawee, and Monroe counties. All active tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm watches have since concluded.
