A sheriff's deputy performed a dramatic rescue late Monday night, pulling a trapped and screaming man from a vehicle engulfed in flames. The incident began around 11:30 p.m. on State Highway 104 in Kingston when the deputy observed the suspect driving significantly over the speed limit.
The driver refused to yield, leading the deputy on a pursuit that saw the suspect reach speeds of 111 miles per hour. The chase concluded when the driver lost control of his SUV, crashing into a tractor in a Kingston yard and causing the vehicle to catch fire.
Body camera footage captured the deputy's immediate efforts to free the man, first attempting to break the driver's side window. After the man indicated he couldn't exit that way, the deputy shifted to the passenger side, eventually forcing the door open while flames grew.
With the assistance of a Port Gamble officer who used a fire extinguisher, the fire was suppressed enough for the deputy to pull the injured driver from the wreckage. Emergency responders airlifted the unidentified man to a hospital for treatment. He is expected to face charges of attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving.
