A ranger on Denali National Park and Preserve's mountaineering team has died after falling into a crevasse on Mount McKinley. Robin Pendery, a seasonal ranger from Enumclaw, Washington, was on a climbing patrol when the accident occurred on Thursday. Despite immediate rescue attempts, she succumbed to her injuries.
The National Park Service confirmed the fatality and stated that the incident is currently under investigation. This tragic event follows closely on the heels of another climbing accident on McKinley, where three climbers from a Latvian expedition perished just a week prior due to a fall near a dangerous pass. A fourth climber from that expedition was successfully rescued.
Mount McKinley, standing at approximately 20,310 feet, presents numerous challenges to climbers. Pendery fell near the 14,000-foot camp, an area known for its exposed sections where serious accidents have happened over time. Park officials expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their colleague.
