8 Sep
Summary
- Retired sergeant allegedly earned over Rs 4 lakh monthly from cramped PG.
- Building collapsed during renovation, killing seven people.
- Fifteen rooms housed 45 students, each paying Rs 10,000 monthly.

A five-storey building in Delhi's Satya Niketan, operating as a boys' PG accommodation, collapsed on Sunday, resulting in seven fatalities. Hariram Gupta, an 81-year-old retired IAF sergeant, has been arrested for allegedly running the illegal PG. His wife and son were also apprehended for their alleged involvement in managing the property.
Investigators estimate Gupta was earning over Rs 4 lakh monthly. This revenue was generated by cramming 45 students into just 15 rooms, with each student reportedly paying at least Rs 10,000 per month. The building, estimated to be 40-50 years old, had additional floors added over time.
The collapse occurred while renovation work was underway, including in the basement. The victims included five students and two labourers. Five individuals were injured and are receiving medical treatment, with two in critical condition. Authorities have initiated a case and are exploring the involvement of private entities in facilitating such illegal operations.
