Father and Son Killed in Delhi Building Collapse
27 Oct
Summary
- A father and son died after a building roof collapsed in northeast Delhi.
- Family alleges owner fled and delayed rescue operations.
- Police arrested the owner, with a contractor also sought.
A building collapse in northeast Delhi's Milan Garden claimed the lives of a father and son. Chanderpal (60) and his son Vijay Kumar (33), who were contractors, were overseeing work when a newly constructed roof gave way on Monday. Their bodies were recovered at 7 am, approximately 14 hours after the collapse.
The family has accused the building owner of locking an entry gate and misleading locals about people being trapped. They also allege a significant delay by authorities in deploying heavy machinery for rescue efforts, which they believe may have led to the fatalities.
Authorities responded with fire brigade vehicles, ambulances, and a crane, alongside civil defence volunteers and an NDRF team. However, the family asserts that heavy machinery was only sent in at 2 am, nine hours after the incident, with the victims ultimately pulled from the debris at 7 am.
Police have registered a complaint and arrested the building owner on Monday. An investigation is underway to locate a contractor who had allegedly outsourced the work to Chanderpal and Vijay. The building was undergoing a second storey construction after previously serving as a tyre godown.
