Dehradun Rains Trigger Tree Collapses, Traffic Snarls
12 Jun
Summary
- At least 12 trees fell along Rajpur Road and Garhi Cantt due to rains.
- Traffic experienced disruptions and slow movement on affected roads.
- Uttarakhand is bracing for continued widespread rainfall with an 'Orange Alert'.

Dehradun experienced considerable disruption on Friday as heavy rainfall led to the collapse of at least 12 trees along Rajpur Road and Garhi Cantt. This incident, coupled with ongoing diversions for a presidential visit, caused traffic snarls and slow movement on affected routes, including Mussoorie Road. Officials from the disaster management office reported that while rural roads in Chakrata and Tyuni were partially blocked, the city itself did not suffer major waterlogging or other extensive damage.
In response to the tree falls, rapid response teams were already stationed in the area, and tree lopping had been a daily activity following similar incidents last week. Traffic police confirmed that fallen trees were removed promptly, allowing gradual traffic flow. Meanwhile, the regional meteorological centre issued an 'Orange Alert' for Uttarakhand, forecasting widespread moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph for the next 24 hours.
The intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease slightly from June 13, with precipitation concentrating in western districts. Intermittent thunderstorms and strong winds of up to 50 kmph may still occur between June 13 and June 15, primarily in isolated areas across the state.
