One Dead, Many Injured in German Storms

Severe storms have caused significant disruption and casualties across southern Germany. In Karlsruhe, a person tragically died when a tree collapsed during a thunderstorm. Emergency services were inundated, with hundreds of firefighters responding to over 250 weather-related calls, including reports of flooding and damaged traffic lights.

Other regions also experienced severe weather. Pforzheim and the Ludwigsburg area reported numerous storm-related incidents, such as fallen roof tiles and flooded basements. In Besigheim, lightning strike caused a roof fire, leading to minor injuries. Near Stuttgart, a building sustained approximately 100,000 euros in damage from falling trees.

Storms extended to Bavaria, with a series of hydroplaning accidents on Highway 8 resulting in serious and minor injuries. Saarbrücken also faced over 50 incidents due to heavy rain, wind, and lightning. Looking ahead, the German Weather Service forecasts continued thunderstorms on Friday, potentially severe, with heavy rain, hail, and strong to squally winds expected nationwide, except for the northwest and west.
