The storm also caused significant flooding in the Bahamas, which was expected to subside later on Thursday, although it could persist in Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. According to a study by Imperial College London, Hurricane Melissa was made four times more likely due to human-caused climate change.
The United States said it was in contact with the governments of Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas, and was prepared to offer immediate humanitarian aid to the people of Cuba affected by the hurricane. The UK government also announced £2.5 million in emergency funding for the region.
