Deadly Earthquake Rocks Cebu, Leaves Hundreds Injured

On September 30th, a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the province of Cebu in the Philippines, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. As of October 5th, 2025, the official death toll has risen to 70, with the majority of the casualties occurring in Bogo City, the epicenter of the quake.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, the earthquake has also left over 550 people injured across several municipalities, including Bogo City, Tabogon, Medellin, and San Remigio. The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) reports that a total of 128,294 families or 457,554 persons were affected by the disaster, with at least 407 families or 1,347 persons seeking refuge in evacuation centers or temporary shelters.
To provide relief and support to the displaced residents, the national government has set up tent cities in affected areas, such as Barangay Cogon in Bogo City. The Philippine Red Cross has brought in over 2,500 family tents, each capable of accommodating a family of five, along with blankets and other essential supplies. The Department of Social Welfare and Development has also distributed 75,000 boxes of family food packs to the local government units in Cebu.
The aftershocks from the earthquake are expected to continue for several more weeks, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recording over 5,092 tremors since the initial quake. Experts warn that some of these aftershocks may reach magnitudes as high as 5.1, though the frequency and intensity are expected to decrease over time.
