Toxic Blue Quarry: Danger Beneath Breathtaking Hue
28 May
Summary
- Quarry water pH level comparable to bleach, posing severe health risks.
- Social media posts falsely promote dangerous quarry as swimming spot.
- Police issue tickets and seize vehicles for dangerous parking around quarry.

Hoffman Quarry, known as the 'Blue Lagoon', has seen a surge in visitors, prompting urgent warnings from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service. The vivid blue water is highly alkaline, with a pH level similar to bleach, posing significant health dangers. These include skin and eye damage, and stomach problems. Cold water shock is also a risk, even in warm weather.
Misleading social media posts have presented the quarry as safe for swimming, contrary to official advice. In response to increased visitor numbers and safety concerns, police have taken enforcement action against dangerously parked vehicles. Authorities are also reapplying toxic dye to the water, a measure previously used between 2017 and 2024, to deter trespassers and anti-social behavior.
Similar issues are occurring at nearby Waterswallows Quarry. Derbyshire Police have seized 21 cars for dangerous parking and are addressing nuisance motorbike activity. The Royal Life Saving Society has echoed these warnings, noting a rise in accidental drownings during warmer periods across the UK.
