Cruise Storm Horror: Passenger Dies After Spine Injury
12 Mar
Summary
- Passenger suffered severe spine injury during a violent storm.
- Delayed medical care may have worsened injury severity.
- Over 100 passengers were injured during the severe weather.

A tragic incident occurred in late 2023 when an 85-year-old passenger, Trevor Gilks, sustained a severe cervical spine injury during a violent storm in the Bay of Biscay. The Saga Spirit of Discovery encountered Force 11 winds, causing the ship to roll violently and throwing Mr. Gilks from his chair.
Despite immediate medical attention, including an X-ray, the severity of his spinal injury was not immediately clear. A radiologist on shore could not definitively assess the cervical spine from emailed images. Mr. Gilks later experienced tingling and loss of feeling in his legs, prompting a doctor to recommend evacuation.
However, the captain decided against a helicopter transfer due to rough conditions, opting to wait until the ship docked in Portsmouth. By the time he reached the hospital, doctors diagnosed a permanent quadriplegic condition due to the severe spinal injury. He passed away on November 8, 2023.
The Marine Accident Investigation Board report highlighted that the delay in identifying the injury and the subsequent suboptimal treatment may have worsened the outcome. The report also noted that the captain's decision to cross the Bay of Biscay in high seas was not effectively challenged, despite adverse weather advisories.
Saga Cruises has apologized for the distress caused to Mr. Gilks' family. The investigation has led to recommendations for improved vessel safety devices and better crew decision-making protocols in severe weather. Over 100 passengers sustained injuries during this event.
